Captain Jenik passed away from a cause still to be determined, suspected heart attack, while operating fire department apparatus returning to the department from lunch. Firefighters, city honor Capt. Edward Janik

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS _ Fire trucks and police cars from the Hillcrest-area communities moved slowly beneath the crossed ladders of a city fire truck Tuesday at Knollwood Cemetery.

It was the traditional salute to a fallen firefighter, but this time it was one of their own. Capt. Edward Jenik, 54, died of a heart attack Sept. 28 while on duty.

The City of Highland Heights and its residents have lost a great fire fighter and friend, Chief Edward Bencin said in a press release.

Jenik was dedicated to the community, and was a respected professional and community leader, Bencin said.

The captain joined the department in 1976 after serving in the U. S. Navy. In his 30-year career, the Lyndhurst resident held many titles, including emergency medical services coordinator from 1982-93, fire prevention officer and member of the Hillcrest Fire Investigative Team. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1980, then became captain/executive officer in 1996.

Jenik's unexpected death leaves a big hole in the department, Mayor Scott Coleman said.

He has been here for so long, he was one of those guys you just take for granted because he got so much done. He was always busy doing his job. There was never any idle time with him, Coleman said.

In addition to being Bencin's right-hand man, Jenik mentored many of the other firemen.

I'm sure they will miss him even more than they realize now, Coleman said.

Jenik is survived by his wife, Kathy, son Dan, daughter Michelle, and granddaughter Hanna.

Ohio Captain Died on Duty

The U.S. Fire Administration has listed the death of an Ohio fire captain who died last last month of unknown causes.

Capt. Edward Jenik, 53, of the Highland Heights Fire Department, was found slumped over the wheel of his vehicle in the middle of the road. He was returning to the station from lunch when he was located.

Firefighters said earlier in the day the captain had complained of feeling very tired.
