January 26, 2002 -- Three hundred New York firefighters will visit 300 cities to thank the American people for their support following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, a group of U.S. mayors announced yesterday.
The 300 will be chosen by lottery, one from each fire company. They will visit the various cities on the weekend of March 1.

The announcement was made at the U.S. Conference of Mayors, which for the first time split its annual meeting between Washington, D.C., and New York.

Serving as "ambassadors of thanks," the firefighters will take along mementos from their firehouses and the city.
