Popular in Firehouse for Culinary Skills

Nov. 29, 2001

It's hard to find someone in West Brighton, Staten Island, who didn't know and like FDNY Lieutenant John Fischer.

Fischer, who was posthumously promoted to captain five days after losing his life while evacuating others from the trade center, was known as a devoted father, husband and one of the best chefs in the FDNY.

He loved to cook, and would often treat his firehouse mates to culinary bliss. The 46-year-old from Ladder Co. 20 also arranged his free time to spend it with his children, wife and their many relatives and friends. He also found the time to run several miles each day.

Fischer is survived by his wife, Jean; sons Timothy and John; daughter, Laura; three brothers George, William and Robert as well as his sister, Maureen Sanborn.
