    Mass Goes To Heart

    Mass goes to `heart'
    Monday, November 19, 2001
    By Bruce Coulter

WORCESTER -- Michael P. Brotherton took his place at the altar in St. Paul's Cathedral yesterday, ringing a bell in memory of his father and the other five Worcester firefighters who lost their lives battling a blaze nearly two years ago.

The echo of the bell sounded not only for Worcester's fallen heroes, but also for firefighters across the nation who lost their lives to save others, including the more than 300 who died Sept. 11 at the World Trade Center in New York. More than 1,000 people attended the fourth annual Firefighters and EMS Mass, a service that has taken on added significance since the Worcester Cold Storage and Warehouse Co. fire on Dec. 3, 1999.

After hearing reports of people trapped inside, Firefighters Paul A. Brotherton, Jeremiah M. Lucey and Joseph T. McGuirk, and Lts. Thomas E. Spencer, Timothy P. Jackson and James F. Lyons III entered the smoke-filled building to conduct a search. It was the last time they were seen alive.

Stephen C. Foley, chaplain for the Norwich, Conn., Fire Department, and fire chaplain of New England, offered the homily. He paid tribute not only to the six men, but also to First Deputy Commissioner William Feehan, Deputy Fire Chief Raymond Downey and Battalion Fire Chief Charles Kasper, all of the Fire Department of New York.

On Dec. 5, 1999, Chief Kasper arrived in Worcester on behalf of Deputies Feehan and Downey and the FDNY to offer assistance to Worcester and its firefighters.

On Sept. 11, all three lost their lives in the World Trade Center disaster.

Chaplain Foley said that because Worcester has been known for years as the ``Heart of the Commonwealth,'' it is fitting that the shoulder patch worn by Worcester firefighters is emblazoned with a heart.

``On Dec. 3, 1999, those who wear that shoulder patch gave that heart a new significance,'' he said. ``They never hesitated -- they never looked back. With hearts full of love, they entered the Kingdom of Heaven.''

It was, he said, the same spirit of love that compelled a delegation of Worcester firefighters to go to New York after the Sept. 11 attacks.

Closing his homily, Chaplain Foley offered a quote by Oliver Wendell Holmes: ``What lays behind us, and what lays before us, are tiny matters with what lies inside us.''

Bishop Daniel P. Reilly then bestowed the Diocese of Worcester St. Florian Award to state Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan; Fire Chief Gordon Wentworth of Webster; and Firefighter Frank Raffa, head of Worcester's firefighters union.

St. Florian is the patron saint of firefighters.

Fire Marshal Coan was recognized for his efforts in addressing the spiritual needs of firefighters and their roles during a crisis, and for organizing the state chaplains as part of emergency response. The chaplains' first call to duty was the blaze at the Worcester Cold Storage building; they also were sent to New York City in the wake of the terrorist attacks.

Chief Wentworth was honored for his efforts in building a superior volunteer force in Webster and also for supporting the spiritual needs of firefighters in Norwich and Worcester.

Firefighter Raffa, president of Local 1009 of the International Association of Fire Fighters, was given the award for incorporating the social mission of his faith into his union work and for his leadership during and after the warehouse fire.

After presenting the awards, Bishop Reilly introduced Firefighter James A. Kadnar, a member of Ladder Company 54, Bronx, N.Y., who was standing quietly in the back of the church.

Speaking loud enough to be heard over the applause of a standing ovation, Bishop Reilly said, ``God bless you for what you did. We wept with you.''

Before the Mass ended, the Worcester Fire Brigade Pipes and Drums and Honor Guard performed ``The Star-Spangled Banner.''
