    Department boosts training year after fatal warehouse fire

    The Phoenix Fire Department now rents retail buildings for training and has burned down a warehouse after a yearlong investigation found firefighters needed better training to battle commercial blazes like the one that killed a fireman last year.


    The department found that it focused too much on fighting smaller residential blazes and is asking for about $25 million over the next five years to boost its commercial firefighting capabilities. The request follows an exhaustive investigation into the department's efforts since Bret Tarver's death a year ago today.

    "There's an enormous set of lessons there," Phoenix Fire Chief Alan Brunacini said. "You can't lose a firefighter and say, 'If I could do it over again, I would do it the exact same way.' A guy died and he didn't get hit by a meteor. This was a tactical death."

    Tarver, 40, died when he became disoriented and ran out of air while fighting a blaze inside a Southwest Supermarket at 35th Avenue and McDowell Road. Other firefighters suffered smoke inhalation as they struggled to rescue him.

    "Forty houses could fit inside that Southwest Supermarket," said Billy Shields, president of the United Phoenix Firefighters Association. "You can't just go in there with a hose line and put it out."

    The department now wants to buy new equipment and trucks and add personnel, all to better handle commercial fires and rescue fallen firefighters. Among the requests:
