    Olympian's Bracelet Tribute

    OLYMPIAN'S BRACELET TRIBUTE

    By ADAM MILLER

    March 28, 2002 --

U.S. silver-medal bobsledder Todd Hayes wore an engraved bracelet in honor of fallen WTC firefighter Robert Wallace during his recent Salt Lake City run - and said it gave him the strength to win.
In another touching tribute yesterday, Hayes, 32, presented the bracelet - which he hadn't taken off since last month's Olympics - to Wallace's family during an emotional meeting at the victim's Brooklyn firehouse.

"The bracelet helped me win the medal because it helped me be relax and enjoy the moment," Hayes said at Engine Co. 205 in Brooklyn Heights.

"I would look at the bracelet for inspiration."

Wallace's widow, Nancy, 44, choked back emotion as she put on the copper-colored bracelet, which carries her husband's name, rank and company.

"This means so much to me and my family," Nancy said. "It was a great tribute to Robert."
