The Fire Department has canceled its traditional June Medal Day festivities to create special honors for heroes of the World Trade Center attacks.

The ceremony will take place in the fall and be pegged to the first anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

"The unparalleled tragedy of the World Trade Center, where we lost so many brave men, has led the department to cancel Medal Day and honor the heroes who gave their lives," said an FDNY operations memo.

Officials are designing a World Trade Center Medal of Valor to honor the 343 FDNY members who died in the attacks.

All other members at the disaster site from 8:46 a.m., when the first plane struck, until the final collapse at 10:28 a.m. will receive a Survivor/Rescuer Ribbon.

A second Rescuer Ribbon will go to those members at the site from 10:29 a.m. until the last victim was pulled out alive at 1:28 p.m. Sept. 12.

A Campaign Ribbon will be given to all who were in the Fire Department on Sept. 11 and to retired members who volunteered their services.

"It is a very dignified and solemn expression of the feeling of the members that nothing should detract from honoring the memory of the 343," said Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta.
