Firefighter Who Died Putting Duty First Is Mourned

Friends and family yesterday recalled a Staten Island firefighter who went to work despite having an injured back and lost his life in the World Trade Center collapse.

Firefighter Paul Beyer, 39, saw the smoke billowing out of the top floors of 1 World Trade Center after returning from an emergency run to a lower East Side housing project. He rushed with his colleagues to the Trade Center and was last seen on the 31st floor as the tower crumbled.

Yesterday, hundreds of mourners attended Beyer's funeral at Our Lady Help of Christians Church in Staten Island.
