Heroes Wanted targets women, minorities

With a waiting list of more than 4,000 names, the Fire Department has no trouble finding people who want to join New York's Bravest.But yesterday, the department launched Heroes Wanted, a recruitment drive to get more women and minority-group members into the mix.

"I think a lot of communities just don't recognize that there are opportunities in certain areas," Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday as he announced the effort outside Engine Co. 230 in Brooklyn.

The department is overwhelmingly white and male. Of the city's 8,801 rank-and-file firefighters, only 22 are women, 246 are African-American and 377 are Hispanic.
