On the southern tip of Manhattan, in a place called Battery Park, six former Holy Cross swimmers will test their athletic mettle this morning.
Several years ago, Mike Toner, co-captain of the Crusaders swim team in 1963, started planning to build a relay team to compete in the 28.5-mile Manhattan Island Marathon Swim. Two years ago, he viewed this event as a monumental challenge.
On 9/11, though, his feelings changed. The challenge was still monumental, but for different reasons.
Toner ultimately recruited five others -- Frank Bongiorno, Leonard Conti, Pat Dietz, Michele Intermont and Bob Somma -- for the marathon. All are former Crusader swim standouts who graduated between 1960 and '89.
The group has dedicated its efforts to honoring the memories of seven HC alumni who died when the Twin Towers fell. They were Ted Brennan, Tom Burke, Neillie Heffernan Casey, John Farrell, Todd Isaac, Beth Quigley and John Ryan.
