Oregon Firefighter Killed by Falling Tree at Colo. Wildfire

Alan Wayne Wyatt, 51, from Ontario, Oregon, a "contract faller" firefighter was killed Tuesday evening when he was hit by a falling tree.

National Interagency Fire Center Spokesman Albert Donavan said the firefighter, who died around 5:45 p.m., was working the Missionary Ridge fire about 20 miles northeast of Bayfield, Colorado in the San Juan National Forest.

A medical evacuation helicopter was dispatched but Wyatt was declared dead on the scene. Donavan said investigators were on the scene gathering information and an autopsy was being done.

Tracy Widner, senior reporter with the Ontario Argus Observer Newspaper said Wyatt was working as a private contractor. He was married with a family and they were still gathering details, she said.

    Probe Begins Into Firefighter's Death

    MICHAELA ULIBARRI
    Associated Press Writer

DURANGO, Colo. (AP) -- A firefighter who died while working on a 72,935-acre wildfire was killed by a falling tree, fire officials said Wednesday.

A preliminary investigation indicated Allan Wyatt was looking in a different direction when the tree fell on him Tuesday.

``Accidents like this are unfortunately common on large wildfires,'' said forestry supervisor Mark Stiles.

Wyatt was at least the ninth firefighter killed on the job nationwide this season and the sixth to die in Colorado.

Wyatt, 51, of Ontario, Ore., was part of a four-member private contracting team working on hazardous tree removal north of Durango.

``You hear different things about situations that happen on fire lines but you never expect someone to seriously get hurt,'' said Steve Hart, the fire's incident commander.

An autopsy was ordered, Stiles said.

The blaze, which has destroyed 56 homes, was 55 percent contained.

Larry Floyd, operations manager for the east flank of the fire, said there was a significant risk that it still could blow up.

``This is my fourth fire this year and I'm caught in new territory because I've never seen such a dry fuel source,'' he said. ``This is actually outside our realm of experience.''

Five firefighters from Oregon were killed when a van carrying them to another wildfire crashed in western Colorado on June 21. Three crewman on a C-130A air tanker were killed June 17 when the plane's wings snapped off after it dropped a load of retardant on a wildfire near Walker, Calif.

In another development, a federal judge on Wednesday delayed the trial of Terry Barton, the former Forest Service employee charged with deliberately setting Colorado's largest wildfire.

U.S. District Judge Richard Matsch did not set a new trial date for Barton, who had been scheduled for trial Aug. 26 in the 138,000-acre fire that destroyed 133 homes. Attorneys said they needed more time to prepare.
