    Granholm, 28

The Esko, Minnesota firefighter killed Monday when a four-car crash slammed into crews working a vehicle fire on Interstate 35 has been identified by fire officials as Captain Kim Granholm.

    Esko Fire Department

Granholm, 28, was going into his fourth year of service at the Esko Fire Department. His wife, Allina, also a member of the department, was working alongside him when he the accident happened.

"He was a very, very dedicated firefighter," said Jason Hill, a friend and fellow firefighter. "He spent a lot of time here. And to make Captain in four years shows how much everybody thought of him."

Granholm was struck by a car Monday when a multi-vehicle pileup slid onto the shoulder of I-35, where firefighters were working a car fire.

"They were just about to clear the scene and Kim was finishing up the paperwork for the car owner," Hill said. But then Granholm, two other firefighters and a police officer were struck at the scene.

Hill and several other firefighters back at the fire station got a report of several injuries on I-35 but were shocked to find their own members in need of assistance.

"We didn't know our people were involved until we got there," Hill said.

Granholm was transported by helicopter to a Duluth hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 10:30 a.m.

The other victims were taken to Duluth by ambulance and are doing well, Hill said. One firefighter was released after a few hours and the other was released after receiving surgery on a broken leg.

Granholm is survived by his wife Allina, also an Esko firefighter, and his two daughters ages nine and three.

Hill said he was an avid fisherman and enjoyed riding snowmobiles. He worked as a driver for a food distribution company.

Granholm's death is the first line of duty death in the department's 53-year history, as well as the first time a member has even suffered serious injury, Hill said.

"He was one of the most valuable firefighters at the station," Hill said. "It's a great loss to the community."

The department has established a benefit fund for Granholm's family. Donations can be sent to Republic Bank, 3 Thomson Road, Esko, MN 55733. For information, call (218) 879-7388.

Visitation will be Friday, July 5 from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m., followed by the funeral service at the Esko School Gymnasium. Hill said the streets will be lined with fire apparatus from surrounding communities.
