Roswell, New Mexico Fire Chief Dies from Shooting Injuries

Roswell, New Mexico Fire Chief Louis Jones passed away Tuesday morning as a result of the gunshot wound to the head he sustained March 16 at the scene of a house explosion.

Although Jones appeared to be recovering last week, he died at a Lubbock, Texas, hospital at about 11 a.m. Tuesday. The hospital took him off life support because of an infection developed over the past few days, said Jan Elliott, Executive Director of EMS Region III.

After the incident Jones made it through surgery and was listed in critical condition. Although he was unconscious, department officials said he was able to respond to his wife and brothers by holding their hands.

Jones, a Roswell native, had been with the department since 1982 and was named fire chief last April.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, who is a firefighter in Fort Worth, Texas and sons Cody and Marty, a Chaves County sheriff's deputy.

Further information will be available Wednesday.

Jones was one of four people shot by a burn victim identified as Paul Freeman. When he was approached by rescue workers, Freeman opened fire on police, firefighters and neighbors before fatally turning the gun on himself.

Ambulance Driver and Paramedic Steven Lovato with private ambulance company AMR was killed on the scene. A neighbor was also killed and a four-year-old was critically wounded.

Freeman had a history of mental health issues, domestic violence, and always carried a weapon, police said.

Evidence of accelerants were found inside the demolished house, which belonged to Freeman's girlfriend.
