NEW YORK - A team of Worcester firefighters and police raised the flag this morning, beating their counterparts from Newark, N.J. to the finish line in the semifinals of the Bravest and Finest competition on the ""Today'' show.
Worcester will face the St. Louis-Philadelphia winner in two weeks for the championship of the nationally televised event.
This obstacle course was far different from the one Worcester beat Sacramento on two weeks ago, and the local team breezed through most of it. Firefighter Robin Mitchell gave Worcester a big early lead by speeding through a challenge involving a series of hanging ropes.
Much of the advantage evaporated on the last obstacle, though, as firefighter Carl Taylor had trouble negotiating a slippery wall. When he finally did make it to the top, Worcester raised its flag, signaling victory.
The team was cheered on by a large crowd in back of Worcester's City Hall.
