Robert Feeney, 41, a New Jersey firefighter collapsed at the scene of a house fire Wednesday night and was later pronounce dead at the hospital.

Feeney, a volunteer with the Phil Daly Hose Co. # 2, Long Branch Fire Department, on the New Jersey Atlantic coast, was at the firehouse when the alarm came in. He responded with the engine and was connecting a five-inch supply line at a single family, three-story wood frame house fire, when he collapsed. EMS on the scene began CPR and he was transported to Monmouth Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 8:55 p.m.

According to Fire Official Kevin J. Hayes Sr., Feeney had been among those who started a Boy Scout Fire Explorer program and was attending a meeting at the station when the call came in. Explorers at the meeting also responded on the call and witnessed their leader go down.

Hayes said Feeney was a 20-year veteran of the department. He was an ex-captain. His father, Henry Feeney, was also a member.

Feeney was a grounds keeper at Rutgers University. He leaves his wife Jayne, sons Anthony, 20, Michael, 12, and James, 7, and daughter Meghan 13.

Memorials and funeral arrangements were pending as of Thursday morning. Firehouse.com will post this information when it becomes available.

Phil Daly Hose Co. # 2 Long Branch Fire Department protects 30,000 people living in an area of 6.6 square miles. It operates out of 8 stations that protect a primarily residential area. The department is a public department whose members are on a combination of paid and volunteer status.
