A Hillsborough County Fire Rescue Captain collapsed and died while exercising at his station Wednesday evening.

Captain Darryl Dzugen began his 24 hour shift at 8 a.m. and went for his nightly jog around the station grounds around 8 p.m. according to IAFF Local 2294 Secretary Firefighter Chris Boles. Shortly thereafter a bystander alerted the crew on duty that a man was down and needed assistance.

Station 14 personnel found Dzugen in cardiac arrest. He was immediately transported to University Community Hospital in Tampa where he was later pronounced dead.

Captain Dzugen began his career with Hillsborough County in 1985 and worked at one of the busiest stations in the County in a section known as "suitcase city" in the university area. He was very involved in teaching at the Hillsborough Community College Fire Science Program. He was also active in Local 2294.

He is survived by his wife Jackie and two sons, five and eight.
