Indiana firefighter Terry Stinson passed away Friday, June 7 more than a week after suffering a heart attack in the line of duty.

Stinson, 44, joined the Brown Township Fire Department in February 1997.

He had just returned from an ambulance run on May 27 and was about to write his report when he was stricken.

"His coworker heard a noise, went to the room, and found him lying on the floor," said Ivan Nevil, state training director at the Indiana State Fire Marshals Office.

Stinson received immediate medical attention from his coworkers and remained on advanced life support at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for about a week, said Brown Township Fire Chief Dave Davis.

Stinson never regained consciousness. He was taken off life support at 2:30 p.m. on June 1, and passed away June 7 at 6:10 a.m.

He then became an organ donor, the chief said.

Stinson is survived by his 14 year-old son and 10 year-old daughter.

"He loved his kids and family. He was just an all around great guy," Davis said.

Stinson served Brown Township as a reserve firefighter, and worked on a hazmat team for Eil Lily & Co. in Indianapolis, Davis said.

His calling was Monday, June 10, from 2-8 p.m. at the First Baptist church in Mooresville and his funeral was Tuesday, June 11, at 11:00 a.m. at Mooresville High School at 550 North Indiana St. in Mooresville, Indiana.

"Our department not only lost a good friend but one heck of a firefighter and EMT," Davis said.

The Brown Township Fire Department protects a population of 10,000 in a residential area of 29 square miles. According to the department's web site, they are a combination department with 15 career firefighters and 25 paid reserve.

The department experienced a previous line of duty death on December 21 1963, when firefighter Leonard T. Shover died while fighting a residential fire after the chimney collapsed.
