A California firefighter died in the line of duty Friday, May 31 after he collapsed while taking the annual Pack Test for wildland firefighting certification.

Firefighter Robert Broussard, 59, was a five-year veteran of the Sycuan Fire Department in San Diego County, CA.

The pack test requires firefighters to carry a 45 pound pack a distance of three miles within 45 minutes.

The Sycuan Fire Department had a medic unit on standby at the scene, and immediately responded to Broussard's collapse at about 9:30 a.m.

"We were on him in less than a minute," said PIO Mitch Villalpando.

Broussard was airlifted to Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa, where he was pronounced dead at about 10 a.m.

He is survived by his wife Yolanda and two grown daughters, Michelle and Tanya.

Villalpando said he served on the department's honor guard, and was also an ex-Marine and a Vietnam veteran.

"He was just a heck of a nice guy. Very patriotic. Just a good family man and a fine gentleman," Villalpando said.

Memorial plans will be released when they become available.

The Sycuan Fire Department provides service to both Sycuan Reservation and non-reservation residents over an area of 700 hundred square miles.
