A 28-year-old California firefighter died Wednesday, May 22 after going into cardiac arrest while responding to a medical emergency.

Probationary firefighter Sekou Turner had been with the Alameda County Fire Department since Since July 1, 2001.

He and his crew wrapped up a medical response in Dublin early Wednesday morning and were preparing to leave the scene with a patient. Turner was directing the ambulance as it backed out, when another firefighter saw that he had fallen down into some bushes.

"She thought he might have fainted, but when she knelt down she realized it was more serious," said Deputy Chief Mark Blanchard.

Turner's crew performed CPR en route to San Ramon Regional Medical Center but his pulse kept dropping and he coded, Blanchard said. After an hour at the hospital, he was pronounced dead at 5 a.m.

The cause of the cardiac arrest had not been determined Wednesday.

"He was very happy to be a firefighter," Blanchard said. "He was very outgoing, very helpful, always asking if there was anything he could do."

Blanchard said Turner was one of 22 recent graduates of the department's fire academy and was doing extremely well in his first year.

"This is not only hitting the department hard, but the academy graduates even harder," he said.

According to KPIX-TV 5 in San Francisco, Turner decided to become a firefighter about six years ago after he was stabbed in the heart and his life was saved by San Francisco firefighters.

However, Blanchard could not confirm this information or whether such an injury might have been related to Turner's cardiac arrest.

Public viewing for Fire Fighter Sekou I. Turner (who passed away while on duty Wednesday, May 22) is scheduled for Monday, May 27, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Russell & Gooch Funeral Chapel, 270 Miller Avenue, Mill Valley, CA (415) 388-1573.
