A Georgia firefighter was responding to a call in his private vehicle Tuesday evening when he suffered an apparent heart attack and was involved in a one-car accident.

Firefighter Jeremy Brown, 27, had served the Screven County Fire Department since he was 18, said Chief Harvey Cryder.

Cryder said Brown received advanced medical treatment from fellow firefighters and from Medstar EMS at the scene of the accident. He was transported to Screven County Hospital in Sylvania, where he was pronounced dead at 5:26 p.m.

Brown is survived by his mother, father, brother and sister. Cryder said he worked at a plant that builds motors, and helped his parents with their plant nursery. He also loved fishing, the chief said.

Cryder described Brown as a loyal and dedicated firefighter who did anything he could to help people.

"He was kind of quiet but always there when you needed him," Cryder said. "I don't think he had an enemy in the world. He was just a good guy."

This is the first line of duty death in the department, and the first in Georgia in about two years, Cryder said.

The Screven County Fire Department is a combination department with seven stations, about 100 volunteer firefighters and several paid employees. They cover a county of 655 square miles and a population of 15,000 in a rural area northeast of Savannah.

The memorial service will take place Friday, May 17 at 2 p.m. at the Rocky Ford Baptist Church in Rocky Ford, GA. The burial will follow at the Wade Cemetery on Scarboro Highway.

Donations in Brown's memory may be directed to the Jeremy Brown Fund at the Screven County Fire Department at 618 Frontage Rd. West in Sylvania, GA 30467. The department can be reached at 912-564-2709 .
