    A Mid-North Johnson County VFD member suffered a massive heart attack just after midnight Sunday morning, while assisting at the scene of a gunshot wound transport.

    Kevin Baker, 39, who had joined the department only a month earlier, collapsed as the victim was being moved for helicopter evacuation. He received immediate attention at the scene and was transported by ambulance to Huguley Memorial Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

    Assistant Chief Lance Trout said Baker found the department through their web site and called to see how he could get involved. "He said he wanted to do something for the community," Trout said.

    "He jumped in with both feet and kept running. He made every class and every call. He just left a good impression," Trout said.
