A Gluckstadt volunteer firefighter was hit and killed Wednesday in the southbound lane of I-55 in Madison County as he was helping victims of a wreck, officials said.

Adam Weisenberger, 19, who was traveling in his private vehicle, was the first emergency responder on the scene, Gluckstadt Volunteer Fire Department Chief David Kraft said.

He had checked on the victims in the median and was trying to cross I-55 when a vehicle hit him, Kraft said.

"He landed in the second lane and another vehicle hit him a second time," Kraft said. He said he was not sure why Weisenberger was trying to cross I-55.

Weisenberger, the son of Madison County Emergency Management Director Bill Weisenberger, was pronounced dead at 3:40 p.m. at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, officials said.

The other accident victims, whose names were not released, did not suffer life-threatening injuries, officials said.

Four people were taken to UMC and another was taken to St. Dominic/Jackson Memorial Hospital, officials said.

The accident Adam Weisenberger responded to was reported at 2:43 p.m., half a mile north of Gluckstadt, while heavy rain passed through the metro area. Weisenberger was reported hit at 2:59 p.m.

Weisenberger had been a volunteer firefighter since turning 18, Kraft said. But he had been hanging around the department, where his brother is also a volunteer, since he was about 16, Kraft said.

"Everybody enjoyed him," Kraft said. "He always was there for people when they called upon him."

Adam Weisenberger was well-known in Madison County's public service community, Madison County Sheriff Toby Trowbridge said.

He often rode along with Trowbridge's deputies.

"He loved firefighting and law enforcement," the sheriff said.

The accident is sure to make police, firefighters and paramedics in the metro area review safety measures at accident scenes, said William Bassett, operations manager for American Medical Response.

"Certainly, everybody in this industry is going to take a little bit different view of how they do their jobs," Bassett said. "It brings the message home so clearly and poignantly (that) it is a dangerous job, and none us are guaranteed to go home at the end of our shifts in the public safety arena."

Bassett also said motorists should be "conscientious drivers, defensive drivers."

The Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol is investigating the accidents. Spokesman Warren Strain released few details, citing the ongoing investigation.

"Adam was doing what he loved to do and that was helping people in their time of need," Bassett said, as he held back tears during a news conference at his office.
