    WHITING, Vermont -- Clarence Francis Birchmore, 60, died March 16, 2002, at Rutland Regional Medical Center after suffering a heart attack while responding to a fire call.

    He was born in Burlington Dec. 15, 1941, son of Raymond and Elsie (Morse) Birchmore. He graduated from Vergennes Union High School in 1960.

    He married Charlotte Cameron Feb. 11, 1961, in the Vergennes Methodist Church.

    Mr. Cameron spent many years as town moderator in Whiting and also served as grand juror. He was active in the Whiting Fire Department, holding the title of chief for 35 years. He was a longtime member of the Addison County Firefighters.

    He enjoyed hunting, maple sugaring and farming at Scapeland Farm. He was an avid golfer and Red Sox fan.

    Survivors include his wife; two sons, Chris Birchmore and Kevin Birchmore; a daughter, Angela Bissonette; four sisters, Jean Gaboriault, Marjorie Whittemore, Lois Trayah and Penny Lander; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

    He was predeceased by his brother, Floyd.

    A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Whiting Community Church. The Rev. Bob Mathis, pastor, will officiate.

    Friends may call today from 6 to 9 p.m. at Sanderson Funeral Service in Middlebury.

    Memorial contributions may be made to the Whiting Volunteer Fire Department.

    Initial Summary:
    Chief Birchmore was responding to an alarm in his personal vehicle when he suffered a heart attack enroute. His car was found along the side of the road by Vermont State Police who were also responding to the call.
