Detroit Firefighter Steven Olander died February 8 from injuries received while he was operating at a hotel fire in January.

Olander was a 13-year veteran of the Detroit Fire Department assigned to Ladder 21, one of the busiest in the city.

According to Detroit Fire Union Secretary Daniel McNamara, on January 10, the members of Ladder 21 were dispatched to a hotel fire. The crew was attempting to raise 35 and 50-foot ladders to reach trapped occupants when one of the occupants jumped, landing on top of Olander. Olander got up, finished out the fire and completed his shift.

The next morning, still feeling pain in his back, neck and head, he drove himself to the hospital. He was released hours later. Later that day he was found unconscious in his home and was subsequently flown to a local trauma center.

Over the month that followed Olander experienced several strokes, periods of coma, and other medical complications before finally succumbing to his injuries.

Olander was a second generation firefighter. His father retired as a Battalion Chief.

Olander had just recently returned to Ladder 21. He started his career at Ladder 21 and wanted to return because it was busy.

Visitation was Sunday, February 10, and again on Monday, February 11, 2-9 p.m. at the Fred Wood Funeral Home-36100 5 Mile Road, Livonia, MI.

The funeral service will be Tuesday, February 12, at10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Loretto Catholic Church 17116 Olympia, Redford, MI.

Memorial donations can be made to Children's Hospital Burn Center, 3901 Beaubien, Detroit, MI, 48201.
