A veteran officer of the Lewes (Delaware) Volunteer Fire Department, Inc., was killed while driving to the Delmarva Volunteer Fireman's Association Executive Meeting in Virginia, Sunday, Feb. 3.

Louis A. Rickards, 55, and his wife were driving near Snow Hill, MD about 10:40 a.m. when their department vehicle was struck in the driver's side by another vehicle at an intersection.

Although wearing a seatbelt, Rickards was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife Naomi was transported to a hospital in Salisbury, MD, treated and was released in the afternoon.

The condition of the driver of the other vehicle was unknown at this time. Maryland State Police are investigating the accident.

Rickards had been with the department 39 years, joining when he was 16. He had graduated from Lewes High School and retired as a member of the Delaware State Police after 25 years of service. He had been working for the Maritime Exchange for Delaware Bay and River.

Lewes VFD PIO Ron Hagan said Rickards had served as president of the department corportation for the last 13 years. He had served as Fire Chief for seven years, secretary for 10 years and treasurer for three years.

Hagan said Rickards was very involved with the Delaware Volunteer Fireman's Association. He was a primary author of the book recently published on the 100th year anniversary of the department.
