    WI Firefighter Dies After Fire

A Wisconsin firefighter died Monday as the result of an apparent heart attack suffered while battling a structure fire Feb 12.

James F. Isberner, 60, had 37 years of service with the Montello Joint Fire District.

"Jim was assisting with pulling a back-up line for an interior attack when he collapsed," said Assistant Chief Chris Klahn.

Isberner was immediately transported to Divine Savior Hospital in Portage, and then airlifted to University of Wisconsin Hospitals in Madison where he died Monday evening.

Over the years Isberner served as an assistant chief and a training officer for the department, and served most recently as a firefighter.

He was an avid golfer and bowler, and worked as a master plumber. "He was a fun-loving guy that contributed to his community," Klahn said.

Isberner is survived by his wife, four sons and nine grandchildren. One of his sons, Doug Isberner, is a fire department captain and was on the interior attack line when his father went down.

"His dad was loaded in the ambulance before he came outside," Klahn said. The younger Isberner was relieved as soon as possible and followed his father to the hospital.

Klahn said this is the first line-of-duty death in the department
