An Amity, PA firefighter died Monday afternoon after suffering a head injury in a fall at the firehouse Sunday morning.

Chief Engineer Donald L. Nester, 56, a 10-year member of the volunteer Amity Fire Company, was doing paperwork on the second floor of the firehouse. According to Fire Chief Kevin Neiswender, he left the office and stopped to talk to two other firefighters. Perhaps forgetting where he was at the stairs, Neiswender said, he turned and fell 12 to 13 steps.

Firefighters on the scene immediately gave Nester assistance and he was taken by medivac helicopter to Brandywine Hospital and Trauma Center in Coatesville.

Neiswender said that Nester was the all around backbone of the department. "He was a behind-the-scenes guy that did an awful lot."
