    Florida FF Collapses At Fire

Ray Lloyd, 65, a volunteer firefighter with Marion County Fire-Rescue #5 in Florida Highlands, collapsed and died of cardiac arrest while working a trailer fire Wednesday afternoon.

Lloyd was working in a support position running a pump panel and setting the staging area when he was stricken. His wife Jean was working beside him at the time.

According to Deputy Chief of Operations David Cooper, the fire call was at an abandon singlewide mobile home. Paramedics on the scene immediately treated Lloyd and he was transported to Munroe Regional Health Care System where he was pronounced dead at 5:22 p.m.

Cooper said the cause of the fire is suspicious and the state fire marshall will investigate it as an arson/homicide.

Debbie Karst, department PIO said the Lloyds had been volunteers for about a year. They were noted for other volunteer service particularly delivering Meals-On-Wheels, driving over 100 miles a day and delivering 40 to 50 meals.

Marion County Fire-Rescue serves a county of 1552 square miles and a population of about 250,000. There are 187 career firefighters and 230 volunteers. Of the 26 fire stations, 14 are staffed by career firefighters and 12 by volunteers. They run fires and ALS rescue and transport.
