Firefighter Cecil Smith, 76, died in the line of duty after a traffic accident Jan. 27.

Smith had 48 years of service with the Meredith Volunteer Fire Department in New Hampshire.

He was responding to the fire station in his personal vehicle Saturday afternoon to handle the dispatch for a structure fire. After the accident, which is under investigation, Smith was transported to a local hospital and then flown to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries at 2:14 p.m. Sunday.

Smith is survived by his wife, three sons and several grandchildren. Two of his sons are also firefighters, said Chief Charles Palm.

"He was an individual with an extreme amount of civic pride," Palm said. In addition to the fire department, Smith was involved in several civic organizations, including the Masonic Lodge and the Odd Fellows.
