Md. Firefighter Struck, Killed at Interstate Accident Scene

Md. Firefighter Struck, Killed at Interstate Accident Scene

    News Director, WPOC-FM

Maryland Line, MD -- Services have not yet been set for a Maryland Line volunteer firefighter who was killed in the line of duty Sunday morning, Sept. 17 along Interstate 83 near the Maryland-Pennsylvania border.

Firefighter John Carothers of the Maryland Line Volunteer Fire Company tells WPOC Radio that a decision is expected later Monday as whether or not there will be a full honors funeral for firefighter Robert "Bob" Humphrey.

Humphrey, 62, of Parkton, responded in his personal vehicle to the scene of a vehicle accident with rollover and rescue on I-83, just south of the Maryland-Pennsylvania border around 9am Sunday. Maryland State Police officials say Humphrey was attempting to cross the highway to assist the victims of the accident when he was struck by a southbound car. Humphrey was flown by MSP helicopter to the University of Maryland-Shock Trauma Center, where he died several hours later.

Firefighter Carothers says family members are still finalizing arrangements for Humphrey, and a decision is expected later Monday evening on those arrangements.

Humphrey is survived by his wife, Cindy; two daughters, Bobbie and Tracey; and a son, Ed. Mrs. Humphrey is active as a medic with the Hereford Ambulance Association, while daughter Bobbie is an EMT/Firefighter with Maryland Line VFC. Carothers says Bobbie Humphrey was scheduled to take the career test for the Baltimore County Fire Department this Friday.

"All of us up here are pushing her to stay at it and take the test," Carothers said.

Alonzo Williams, a spokesman for the Baltimore County Fire Department, says that Bobbie Humphrey will not take the test this Friday as scheduled. "The Department is making special arrangements that she will be able to take the test at a later time," Williams said.

Meanwhile, the Maryland State Police continue their investigation of the accident. They say that no charges will be filed against the driver who struck Humphrey.

The funeral service will be at 11 A.M Friday, September 22, from St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 315 N. Constitution avenue, New Freedom, PA. Interment in Stablers United Methodist Cemetery, Parkton, MD. Viewings from 1 to 3 and 6 to 9 P.M Thursday, September 21, at the J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 24 Second street, New Freedom, PA.
