Kenneth Miller, 64, nine-year member and past president of the Cape Charles Volunteer Fire Department in Northampton County, Va., suffered a massive heart attack and died while fighting a structure fire.

The fire Monday night involved an abandon two-story wood frame house and drew the response of Cheriton and Eastville Volunteer Fire Departments as well. Miller, department hose captain, was backup on a two and a half-inch line when he was stricken.

The Cape Charles Rescue Squad at the scene transported Miller to Shore Memorial Hospital in Nassaowadox where he was pronounced dead. Miller was also a member of the squad, which is separate from the fire department.

According to Cape Charles Chief Steven Wilson, Miller and his family had moved to the area about 15 years ago. He was a self-employed electrical contractor.

Miller was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and is survived by his wife, two adult sons and two adult daughters.

Wilson said Miller's wife, who liked to sit with her husband and watch the sun go down over the Chesapeake Bay, is planning a sunset, beach memorial service. Funeral arrangements are pending.

There are five volunteer fire departments in Northampton County at Cape Charles, Cheriton, Eastville, Nassawadox and Exmore. Rescue squads are available at each of these incorporated towns with the exception of Eastville and Cheriton. Northampton County, population 12,900, is located on Virginia's Eastern Shore.
