Veteran Pa. Assistant Chief Collapses at Scene


At 02:51 hours on August 17, 2002, the North Hampton Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at 4573 Sylvan Drive in Hampton Township. The department encountered an attic fire, with Assistant Chief William Goodrich, Jr., being the first to arrive on scene at 02:58 hours.

Assistant Chief Goodrich entered the building for size up, then exited the building and assumed command of the incident. While performing command activities Assistant Chief Goodrich collapsed at the scene. He was treated at scene by Hampton EMS and transported to North Hills Passavant Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Assistant Chief Goodrich, age 56, was an active firefighter for 39 years, formerly serving as Chief of the Department. He had responded to over 4,500 incidents for the department during his career. He is survived by his wife, Penny, two children from a previous marriage, and three stepchildren.

Funeral arrangements are being handed by Herbert R. King, Jr., Funeral Home, Route 8 and Woodland Circle, Allison Park, PA. Arrangements at this time are incomplete. A memorial fund is being established at the Mars National Bank to benefit his survivors. Additional information will be released by the department as it becomes available
