Firefighter James Hill Sr., 68, of the Daingerfield Volunteer Fire Department in Texas, died of a heart attack following cleanup of a house fire.

Daingerfield was on a 3 p.m. mutual aid call Thursday, Nov. 9 in Lone Star with the Lone Star VFD. The fire had been knocked down and during clean up, Hill complained of shortness of breath, according to Daingerfield Fire Chief Jimmy Cornelius.

Paramedics on the scene decided to transport him to Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview. While en route, Hill suffered a heart attack. He was revived but had another attack in the hospital and died.

Hill lived in Daingerfield for 20 years and was a volunteer for 15 years. Cornelius said he had been named department fireman-of-the-year twice, and three times was the officer to make the most fires in a year. He was the current safety officer for the department.

A retired truck driver, Hill lived in Daingerfield with his wife and mother. He had two sons and a sister in Dallas. The funeral will be Monday at the Restland Funeral Home in Dallas. Plans for a memorial service in Daingerfield are pending.

The Daingerfield VFD has 25 members. They cover the town population of 3500 and work in mutual aid with six other departments in the area.
