FDNY DEPUTY COMMISH DEAD

September 5, 2002 -- Roy Katz, a deputy fire commissioner who oversaw the renovation and construction of scores of new firehouses and other facilities in the city, has died. He was 48.

Katz died yesterday at Memorial Sloan-Kettering hospital after recently being diagnosed with a rare blood disease, Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta said in a news release.

"Roy served the Fire Department for almost two decades and was instrumental in making dramatic changes that have benefited all 16,000 members of the FDNY," Scoppetta said.
