Near Smyrna, a firefighter with the Almaville Volunteer Fire Department has died in the line of duty Thursday afternoon.

The firefighter, identified as Jason Hampton, 19, was responding to a brush fire in a tanker truck when the truck veered off Almaville Road and crashed.

The crash happened around 3 p.m. Thursday. Hampton was the only one on the truck.

Officials said the firefighter recently signed up with the army.

It was the first death ever for the fire department.

Members of the Tennessee Highway Patrol were investigating the crash. There were no other vehicles involved and the stretch of road where the truck lost control was straight.

    About the Department
