    PAXTON- John V. Cavanaugh, 77, of 6 Spring Drive, a World War II veteran and a retired Worcester firefighter, died Thursday, Sept. 26, in The Hospice Residence, Worcester, after a short illness.
    He leaves his wife of 48 years, Elizabeth A. (Mulvey) Cavanaugh; three sons, John M. Cavanaugh of Holden, James R. and Paul J. Cavanaugh, both of Paxton; a daughter, Kathleen Korycki of Worcester; a brother, Thomas R. Cavanaugh of Worcester; a grandson; nephews and nieces. A brother, William F. Cavanaugh, and two sisters, Virginia Dolan and Ann G. Graham, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of Roger P. and Mary H. (Carrigan) Cavanaugh, and lived many years in Paxton. He graduated from Commerce High School, Worcester, and New England Business School of Accounting. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a radioman in the Normandy invasion and the Pacific.
    Mr. Cavanaugh was a Worcester firefighter for 31 years, becoming a lieutenant in 1959 and a captain in 1962; he retired in 1978. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Cherry Valley American Legion Post 443, St. Columba Church and its St. Vincent De Paul Society. He also was a Christian doctrine teacher at the church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed carpentry, swimming and the ocean.
    The funeral will be held Monday, Sept. 30, from O'Connor Brothers Funeral Home, 592 Park Ave., Worcester (www.oconnorbrothers.com), with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Columba's Church, 18 Richards Ave. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hours are 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, in the funeral home. Flowers may be sent, or memorial donations made to American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
