COMMISH: NO LAYOFFS OF FIREFIGHTERS

By ERIC LENKOWITZ

April 10, 2003 -- Fire Department budget cuts can be minimized with a little help from the state, but no matter what happens, "there will be no layoffs of firefighters," Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta said yesterday.

The fire commissioner said the expected 382 civilian employee layoffs are "terrible," but he hopes that number will be decreased.

"I'm hoping Albany helps out. I'm hoping the commuter tax comes through, I'm hoping that Wall Street recovers a little and the income comes from there," Scoppetta said after an EMS graduation ceremony on Randalls Island.

But Scoppetta made it clear who was on the chopping block.

"At this point, we're looking at temporary and provisional employees," he said. "There will be no layoffs of firefighters."
