FIREHOUSE RESCUE $QUAD

By BILL HOFFMANN

April 22, 2003 --
An ambitious grass-roots effort to save eight city firehouses from being shuttered is under way, with a goal of raising $10 million.

Manhattan public-relations guru Adam Brecht said his campaign - "Keep NYC's Firehouses Open" - has been successful so far, but a lot more money is needed.

At stake are the future of five firehouses in Brooklyn, two in Queens and one in Manhattan -all potential casualties of the sweeping cuts ordered by Mayor Bloomberg to help close a $3.4 billion budget gap.

Brecht said New Yorkers are particularly keen on keeping the houses open in light of the incredible bravery and heroism city firefighters showed on Sept. 11, 2001.

He hopes to raise $10 million through his nonprofit group over the next four weeks through the small donations of private citizens, as well as larger corporate donations.

Sports commentator Bob Costas kicked off the effort with a $100 check, and other boldface names have followed suit.

But the donations so far have still not been enough, said Brecht, a one-time staffer for Sen. Alfonse D'Amato, who works in public relations on Wall Street.
