AMITE, La. (NNS) -- Hot, molten steel splattered in a colorful display of natural fireworks, as the bow stem was recently formed for PCU New York (LPD 21) at a Louisiana foundry.

Twenty tons of steel salvaged from the remains of the World Trade Center in the aftermath of terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, was melted and poured into a mold to form the first component for the amphibious transport dock named in honor of the Empire State.
