William Lacy, a firefighter with the Augusta Fire Department, was discovered unconscious at the fire station Thursday, June 17.

According to Chief Al Gillespie, Firefighter Lacy, 47, was discovered by his fellow firefighters in the dormitory area at approximately 8:00 a.m. He was unresponsive and crew members were unable to revive him. He was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:30 p.m.

Chief Gillespie speculated that Firefighter Lacy's death might have been cardiac related. The autopsy report has not been completed.

Firefighter Lacy was a 22-year career firefighter with the Augusta Fire Department. He was a long time resident of the community and was well liked by his co-workers. "Firefighter Lacy always had a smile on his face. He was a good guy and a super firefighter," Chief Gillespie said. He went on to say, "I could always count on him."

Visitation for Firefighter Lacy will be held Thursday, June 24, 6-8 p.m. at Phinazee and Sons Funeral Home in Waynesboro, Georgia. The funeral will take place Friday, June 25, at 2 p.m. at The Rock Creek Baptist Church in Waynesboro.

Firefighter Lacy is survived by his wife, and their four children.

There is also a memorial being set up in honor of Firefighter Lacy. For more information contact the Augusta Fire Department (706) 821-2909.
