South Carolina Teen Firefighter Killed While Responding to Call

Students, Firefighters Mourn Volunteer Killed In Accident
    Teen Was Week From Graduation

    Story by The Carolina Channel

BELTON, S.C. -- A high school senior and volunteer firefighter died in an early morning crash in Anderson County Friday morning.

Anderson County Deputy Coroner Charlie Bozeman said Michael Martin was responding to an emergency call with the Ebenezer Fire Department just after 6 a.m. when his pickup ran off Wright School Road and struck a tree.

The pickup was torn in half by the impact. Martin, 18, died at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Bozeman said Martin was a week from graduating from Belton-Honea Path High School. He had served with the Ebenezer Fire Department for three years.

"He was a real energetic kid, you know, he was always there, you know, to help do stuff. You could always depend on him. He was always around the department on nights and weekends," Fire Chief Rodney Lowe said.

Grief counselors are at the high school helping students dealing with the tragedy. Several students left school early after hearing of the accident.

"[I'm] shocked and dazed, but knowing Michael, he was responding to a call and just doing what he loved to do," teacher Glenn Stevens said.

Lowe said Martin is eligible to be buried with full fireman burial rights.

The accident is still under investigation.
