The North Lake, Wisconsin Volunteer Fire Department lost their assistant chief Thursday when he collapsed while at a neighboring station.

Assistant Fire Chief Mike Kilpatrick, 58, a veteran of over 30 years, was on stand-by with Chief Terry Stapleton at the Stone Bank FD while it and other departments fought a five-alarm fire at an unfinished condominium development in downtown Okauchee.

An ambulance with three EMTs from Lisbon FD, also on standby, rushed to the aid of Kilpatrick and he was transported to Oconomowoc Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to Training Officer Bill McBroom, Kilpatrick had recently retired from the Naga-Waukee Golf Club where he was head of maintenance. He is survived by his wife and three adult children.

McBroom said Kilpatrick received his initial firefighter training in the military. He was fond of telling how his honeymoon hotel became a free stay after he helped put out a kitchen fire while there.

The department is west of Milwaukee.
