MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. -- A Martin County firefighter is dead after a boating accident in Stuart.

A day of fun for a group of firefighters ended in tragedy after a Jet Ski collided with a boat, killing one man and injuring several others.

"His leg was completely gone except for a chuck of skin holding it in place," said witness Debra Hood, who saw the accident happen through her kitchen window.

She immediately called 911 and did whatever she could to save the firefighter.

"My husband made a tourniquet and put it on his upper thigh and covered him with a blanket," said Hood. "We did the best we could with what we had to work with."

There were three firefighters on the boat, called Fast Attack, plus the spouse of one of the firefighters.

The driver of the boat is at Martin Memorial with injuries, as is one other unidentified person.

An investigation is under way to see if alcohol played a part in the collision. The name of the firefighter killed in the accident is not being released until his family is notified.
