An Alabama firefighter suffered a heart attack and died at the scene of a motor vehicle accident on Saturday, April 2nd.

William Poage, 51, served the Pintlala Volunteer Fire Department in south Montgomery County for eight years, said Chief John Meadows.

Poage had just responded to a single-vehicle rollover with minor injuries at about 8 p.m. Saturday when he was stricken.

"After he got out of his vehicle he collapsed," Meadows said. Five other members of the department were also on scene, as well as an ALS ambulance. However, Poage died at the scene.

The chief said Poage was very outgoing, was an active member of his church and worked as an electrician. "Everyone in the community thought a lot of him," Meadows said.

This was the department's first line of duty death. "It's tough," Meadows said.

"There was no warning. He collapsed and that was it."

Poage is survived by his wife Cathy, his parents, three siblings and several nieces and nephews

According to the Montgomery Advertiser, visitation will be held Monday April 4th from 5-7 p.m. at Pintlala Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 5th at 10 a.m. at Pintlala Baptist Church, and interment will follow at Alabama Heritage Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Pintlala Baptist Church or Pintlala Volunteer Fire Department.
