KEANSBURG -- Authorities said a drunken driver killed a longtime borough firefighter as he was directing traffic outside Keansburg High School following a minor chemical spill there Wednesday night.

Joseph Walsh, 76, died at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, around 2 a.m. today from injuries he suffered after being hit on Port Monmouth Road by a motor vehicle driven by Kristina Gogger, 26, of South Amboy.

Gogger was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and failure to use due caution for safety of a pedestrian in a roadway, Keansburg Deputy Chief James K. Pigott said.

Monmouth County Prosecutor Luis A. Valentin said Gogger also could face charges such as vehicular homicide.

"We are continuing our investigation and any additional charges which may be appropriate will be considered,'' he said this afternoon.

Walsh, a longtime Keansburg resident, was a 54-year veteran of the borough's fire department and a member of its first aid squad. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and operated Walsh's Sweet Shop in Keansburg for more than 50 years.

Predeceased by his wife, Eleanor, in 1996, Walsh is survived by three children and nine grandchildren.
