Md. Firefighter Killed in Crash Returning from Paramedic Class

Md. Firefighter Killed in Crash Returning from Paramedic Class

12/4 Update: Officials in Prince George's County have listed this firefighter fatality as a line of duty death. ERT Hammett was laid to rest with fire department honors Thursday.

A Prince George's County firefighter was killed in a car crash on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway south of Laurel.

Emergency response technician Nadar Hammett was driving northbound on the Parkway at about 10:30 p.m. Monday when his car, a white Ford Escort, was struck by a black Ford Expedition between Powder Mill Road and Route 197.

The impact caused Hammett's car to veer off the Parkway, roll over and hit a tree. The 29-year-old from Randallstown was pronounced dead by the county fire department, which arrived on the scene after the Park Police.

The driver of the Expedition was not injured; according to Park Police, he continued driving after the incident, but soon returned.

"The individual came back in the Expedition and fully cooperated with police," said Park Police spokesman Sgt. Scott Fear.

The driver's name, however, has not been released, and no fault has yet been determined in the accident, Fear added.

Hammett was a three-year veteran of the county's Fire/EMS Department, assigned to the Berwyn Heights fire station.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with ERT Hammett's family during this time of tragic and untimely loss," county Fire Chief Ronald Blackwell said in a statement.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing
