    New Jersey Firefighter Dies Battling Blaze

    Ronald Fitzpatrick, 68, a retired Newark firefighter and a volunteer with the of the Phil Day Hose Company of the Long Branch Fire Department, died in the line of duty Saturday evening, according to Associated Press reports and 1st Asst. Chief Buzz Baldanza, LBFD.

    Ron was the department Training Officer, as well as an instructor with the Monmouth County Fire Academy, were he trained 100's of firefighters, according to Baldanza.

    The Associated Press reported, that a blaze had started at an abandoned commercial building in Long Branch at about 4:15 p.m. Before the fire was brought under control, Fitzpatrick died while battling the blaze. The cause of death was believed to be a heart attack.

    Long Branch police and Monmouth County prosecuters were questioning three people in connection with the blaze, according to the Associated Press. A criminal investigation is ongoing and arrests have been made, according to Baldanza.

    Visitation services are being held Wednesday from 1-9 p.m. at Damiano's Funeral Home, 191 Franklin Ave., Long Branch, N.J.,07740-6616.

    A funeral is being held on Thurs. at 10 a.m. at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, 800 Ocean Ave., Long Branch, N.J., 07740.

    Final Summary:
    Firefighter/Training Officer Fitzpatrick and members of his department were fighting a multiple-alarm fire in a vacant commercial building. During the effort, Firefighter Fitzpatrick was in charge of the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) that was in place at the fire. He collapsed from a heart attack. Efforts to revive him at the scene and in the hospital were unsuccessful. The fire was reported to have been caused by arson. Firefighter Fitzpatrick retired in 1986 as a Captain after 27 years with the Newark, New Jersey Fire Department.
