The Hydetown Volunteer Fire Department announced today funeral arrangements for Michael R. Dunlap, 47, who died Tuesday afternoon from a heart attack hours after responding to numerous emergency calls.

Hydetown Fire Chief Craig Farrar said Dunlap mentioned being tired after the last call, but no other symptoms were noted.

A firefighter memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. today at Gordon B. Garret Funeral Home, 303 N. Washington St. Firefighters attending the service should meet at the funeral home no later than 6 p.m. Farrar said carnations will be placed in an empty boot -- a firefighter tradition -- and he, along with Eric Nikolaison, department president, will present Dunlap's family with a Bible. The pair then will address the firefighters and family before the Firemen's Prayer is recited.

Representatives from the State Fire Commission helped with planning, as did Rep. Teresa Forcier. Farrar said he expects a large number of the Hydetown crew to be on hand for the service as they soldier through the unexpected tragedy.

"Everybody's doing OK," said Farrar. "When we're by ourselves, we start thinking and stuff, but we just have to continue on like he'd want us to. Mike was a guy who wasn't too great on fanfare or anything, but he deserves it."

A rescue captain, Dunlap served with Hydetown Volunteer Fire Department for the past four years.

"We'll have big shoes to fill now," Farrar said of the loss.

All three of Dunlap's sons -- Andrew, Kenneth and Delbert ("DJ") -- are making their way through the ranks at Hydetown Volunteer Fire Department, following in their father's footsteps.

Dunlap gave his all to the community and the department, Farrar said, and was dedicated to his work and those it benefited.

"He was a part of the community," Farrar said. "He really cared about going into this 110 percent. When it came to our festival, he was there setting up bingo and working the raffles -- he was the festival. He did a lot of work for us there.

"He set up classes for members and helped new members get oriented to their new home," Farrar said. "When we taught fire safety at the school, he took the time to talk with each child and show them what they need to know. He really enjoyed that."

Following the memorial service, friends will be received at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at the Free Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Friday. Fire department representatives wishing attend the funeral should arrive at the church no later than 10 a.m.

A memorial fund has been established to benefit the surviving family members. Donations may be sent to: Michael R. Dunlap Memorial Fund, c/o Hydetown Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 648, Hydetown, Pa., 16328.
