LEWISTOWN, Pa. -- A Pennsylvania fire officer severely burned during a training exercise Sunday died Tuesday morning in a burn unit in Allentown.

Altoona Fire Capt. Robert Gallardy, 47, was found in the basement of a structure at the Pennsylvania State Fire Academy about 12:45 p.m. suffering second and third-degree burns over 75 percent of his body, including his face

He died Tuesday morning in Lehigh Valley Burn Unit with his family at his side.

Firefighters found him in the corner of a basement room. They extinguished the fire, and extricated the training officer.

NIOSH will share its findings with fire officials. However, the agency does not issue sanctions, said Fred Blosser, a spokesman.

Mr. Blosser said he was not aware that any other agencies were investigating the incident.

A firefighter with more than 30 years service, the captain also was known as a devout family man, the father of three sons.

Prior to employment with Altoona Fire Dept., he was a volunteer in nearby Cambria County, Chief Epple said.
