Massachusett's Firefighters' Death-Benefits Bill OK'd

BOSTON -- A bill requiring communities to offer death benefits to volunteer and call firefighters passed on Beacon Hill yesterday, and the law is now on Gov. Mitt Romney's desk., The so-called McNamara bill, named after Lancaster call firefighter Martin McNamara who died while fighting a house fire in November 2003, requires towns to purchase a life insurance policy or one of two types of annuities for their volunteer public-safety officers.

The bill also includes a $650,000 death benefit for the McNamara family.

Death benefits will also be available to volunteer police officers and EMTs.
